Bruce Irvine awarded Medal of Distinction by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety
Australian healthcare security and emergency preparedness advocate Bruce Irvine has been awarded the Medal of Distinction by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) at an awards ceremony in Las Vegas. Mr Irvine is the only Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) in Australia.
He believes there are issues within our hospitals and other healthcare facilities in relation to the way security and emergency preparedness is approached.
Bruce is the Regional Chair of the IAHSS and a campaigner for change, aiming to educate and promote the need to have specialized training for Healthcare Security Officers, and properly risk assess the low frequency high risk events with limited discretionary time in healthcare.
He emphasises the need to view every day in healthcare as a training day for emergency preparedness. He advocates moving away from the paper plan syndrome and start teaching the humans what to do.
